Roberta Williams, AKA the "Queen of the Graphic Adventure"
One of the Most Important Figures in the History of Video Games &
Co-creator of Sierra
In 1979 Roberta was inspired by the text-only pc game,
Adventure, to design a game that combined storytelling text
with graphics. She used her husband's software engine and an Apple II
home computer to create Mystery House, which was an instant
hit and spawned the adventure game genre. She and her husband formed
the Sierra game company and became an influential force in the pc game
industry. She wrote & designed most of their game catalog, including
the ground-breaking and controversial psychological horror hit,
Phantasmagoria.
Phantasmagoria used live-action actors and footage, as well
as three-dimensionally rendered environments and worked off of
Roberta's 550-page script. Her games have won many awards and a few of
Roberta's popular classics can still be played on Steam and Great Old
Game/GOG. Roberta Williams officially retired in 1996, but she's left
a remarkable legacy of more than thirty iconic games.
