Cold Thermogenesis

The New Ice Bucket Challenge

Girl in Ice Bath

The recent discussions and debates regarding the effectivness of cold thermogenesis have been on the fore front of new media as more and more celebrities are seen in metal tubs, brimming with ice.

The practice of cold thermogensis, in various versions, have been around for thousands of years; Hippocrates, Anglo-Saxon monks, and Nordic Viking tribes have all been known to have a variation of cold thermogensis. You yourself may have already unwittingly been practicing this life hack. Had a swollen ankle? Knee? Bruised lip? Eye? I'm sure you have, and I'm also sure that you used a cold compact press or a bag of frozen peas to bring down the swelling or relieve pain. You know that if you do this, the swelling and pain will subside and that your recovery will be quicker. You do this without really understanding the science behind it but you trust your grandma who had to walk 15 miles to school, in the snow, uphill both ways.

So why should the benefit of your forgotten frozen peas be localized to just your ankle?

The benefits of dunking yourself in a tub full of ice are plentiful and great...and continuously expanding.
