Shrimp farming started in Ecuador almost 50 years ago. The first shrimp farms were established in the south of the country and since then, almost 220,000 hectares of production ponds have been developed. Today are part of an industry that is the first source of non-oil related foreign income in the country. Ecuador is the world’s third largest producer of Litopenaeus vannamei, known also as Pacific whiteleg shrimp, and the largest in South America. Shrimp represents 25% of total non-oil exports, The main markets are China, the European Union, the United States, and Vietnam, among others.

Ecuador offers a high quality Shrimp named as “First Class Shrimp” that used an extensive farming method, which allows it to access all markets without restrictions, as there are no held up due to contamination or the use of controlled substances. Also, the country promotes the production of shrimp free of antibiotics and under the strictest standards of environmental, social and commercial ethics sustainability.
