Influenced by many regions across Europe, Asia and the Middle East - Russia has plenty of delicious & traditional dishes on the menu. Dishes were generally made of wheat, vegetables, berries and fish, though meat is very common these days.

Try out something different in the kitchen this weekend and give one of the recipes below a go!

Pelmeni

Pelmeni are Russian dumplings generally filled with a mix of minced meat, onion, herbs and seasoning. They’re boiled in water or pan fried and served with either sour cream or melted butter - though the addition of vinegar or soy sauce is quiet popular and so delicious 🤤

Borsch

A deep red beet soup that's sure to bring some color to a cold winters day - serve with sour cream (optional but recommended!). Origins of the soup stem from Ukraine, though you’ll find Borsch being cooked in various kitchens across Eastern Europe each in their unique way. Typically made with meat stock, this soup can also be made with a variety of vegetables alone which is popular during periods of fasting. Which ever version you try, you won’t be disappointed!

Piroshki

Piroshki, pirogi, belyashi - whatever you call them, these little hand pies are favoured amongst many trying Russian cuisine for the first time. Common fillings include ground meat, cabbage, potato or mushrooms, which is encased in fluffy dough and then fried or baked in the oven. Best when they’re fresh, these little gems are perfect for a picnic or a quick snack 🧺

Medovik

(Honey Cake)

Transport yourself to cake heaven with this créme de la créme of layered cakes. Soft layers of caramelised honey biscuit are smothered in a creamy, fluffy, sourcream based frosting that’s all topped off with crispy bits of the biscuit for added texture. Let the cake sit a day before eating so the flavours can blend and layers can soften - you won't be able to stop at just one slice.
