KonMari method
Do you love tidying?
Marie Kondo has written four books on organizing, which have collectively
sold millions of copies around the world. Her books have been translated from Japanese into several
languages, including Korean, Chinese, Spanish, Indonesian, Italian, French, German, Swedish, Portuguese,
Catalan, and English. In particular, her book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up (2011) has been
published in more than 30 countries. It was a best-seller in Japan and Europe, and was published in the
United States in 2014.
In the United States and the United Kingdom, the profile of Kondo and her methods were greatly promoted by
the success of the Netflix series Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, released in 2019, which gained Kondo a
nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program. In August
2021, Netflix released a follow-up show, Sparking Joy with Marie Kondo.
She was listed as one of Time's "100 Most Influential People" in 2015.
Kondo opened an online store called KonMari on 18 November 2019.

Ask yourself if it sparks joy
- Commit yourself to tidying up – is an important rule to reiterate and remember. Bailing on a process halfway through – or going into it with a 'meh' attitude – will only sabotage your success.
- Image your ideal lifestyle – helps to create an end goal for the person who’s about to embark on their tidying journey. With a goal, there’s something to work towards – it’s not tidying for tidying’s sake.
- Finish discarding first – ensures that you discard items after finishing each category. Otherwise, by the time you get to the fourth category, you will have inadvertently replaced your living room with a junkyard.
- Tidy by category, not by location – reinforces the process. It’s a reminder to go against what we’re used to, in favor of an optimized method.
- Follow the right order – is a rule that’s close to our own hearts at Process Street. We know how important implementing processes are, and how crucial it is to follow the process. Every. Single. Time.
- Ask yourself if it sparks joy – the last rule on the list – is reconfirmation that you’re assessing an item’s worth through an emotional reaction. Seeing as it’s such an integral step, it’s handy to have it mentioned again in the rules list.
