The Balkans

A travel & photography enthusiasts exploration of the Balkans

The Balkan countries are some of the most diverse and culturally rich countries in Europe. Since 2011, I have made it my mission to show that the region is one of the most beautiful in the world.

Geography
Geographically the Balkan peninsula covers a large portion of south-eastern europe and is comprised of Albania 🇦🇱, Bosnia & Herzegovina 🇧🇦, Bulgaria 🇧🇬, Croatia 🇭🇷, Kosovo 🇽🇰, Montenegro 🇲🇪, North Macedonia 🇲🇰, Romania 🇷🇴, Serbia 🇷🇸, and Slovenia 🇸🇮.

Recent History
Balkan countries represent a largely undiscovered part of Europe, but most known for the Balkan War of the 1990's.
The Balkan War was an incredibly complicated conflict. It was sparked by the collapse of the Soviet Union and the disolution of Yugoslavia in the late 1980's. It was the only exception to an otherwise peaceful transition from communism to capitalism in Eastern Europe.

Today
It is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Scenes of beauty, stunning beaches, snow-capped mountains, links to ancient history, pristine lakes, incredible architecture, unspoiled islands, and idyllic villages.

👉 Fun Fact: Mother Teresa was born in Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia.

Why the Balkans?
I studied the Balkan War as part of a Masters degree and have been fascinated ever since. I am a regular visitor to the region and decided to write a blog about the rich history. Along the way, I have been capturing its stunning beauty as shown on my instagram page. But don't just take my word for it, follow the links below to see for yourself.
