Ghana is a West African country on the Gulf of Guinea, formerly known as the Gold Coast. Its neighbours are Côte d'Ivoire, to the west, Burkina Faso, which lies north, and Togo, to the east.

On 6 March 1957 Kwame Nkrumah declared the country's independence.

1 July 1960, Ghana became a commonwealth republic with Nkrumah as the first President of the country.

The flag of Ghana consists of the colours Red, Gold, Green, and the Black star.

Red represents the blood of those who died in the country's struggle for independence
Gold represents the mineral wealth of the country
Green symbolises the country's rich forests
Black Star stands for the lodestar of African freedom
