Ghana is a West African country on the Gulf of Guinea, formerly known as
the Gold Coast. Its neighbours are Côte d'Ivoire, to the west, Burkina
Faso, which lies north, and Togo, to the east.
On 6 March 1957 Kwame Nkrumah declared the country's independence.
1 July 1960, Ghana became a commonwealth republic with Nkrumah as the
first President of the country.
The flag of Ghana consists of the colours Red, Gold, Green, and the
Black star.
Red
represents the blood of those who died in the country's struggle for
independence
Gold
represents the mineral wealth of the country
Green
symbolises the country's rich forests
Black Star
stands for the lodestar of African freedom
