In 1954, the US Supreme Court’s ruled in Brown v. the Board of Education
initiated a process to end racial segregation in public schools.
Southern states continued to resist calls for desegregation but, four
years later, Louisiana schools were finally forced to desegregate.
Opposition to desegregation mounted, and for her first day of school on
November 14th, 1960, and many days thereafter, young
Ruby Bridges courageously made her long walk to her classroom past
crowds shouting vicious slurs and threats of violence, escorted by only
her mother and four federal marshals.
In May 2018, a group of fifth-graders from Martin Elementary
School in South San Francisco, California, learned about Ruby Bridges
and asked their school board to pass a resolution making November 14th
Ruby Bridges Day. Please join us this year as we honor Ruby's bravery
and resilience with a special walk-to-school day and march.
