Bicycles were first invented by Karl von Drais in 1817. The German baron made the first major development by creating a contraption that had two wheels and could (just about) be steered... The bicycles of that time look very different to those of today - the very first bicycles didn't have any pedals so the rider had to propel themselves forwards (and brake!) using their feet. More information on the evolution of cycling can be found here.
Fast forward two hundred years to a completely revolutionised machine. The lightest weight bicycle on the market weighs a mere 4.4kg, that's less than your average house cat! 2020 is seeing a huge boom in cycling due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Cycling as a mode of transport has become a lifeline for those still commuting to work, delivering shopping and supplies, or simply as a way of trying to keep fit. In fact since the pandemic began, the number of people getting back in the saddle has increased by an incredible 70%!
That said, travelling around on two wheels can be a bit daunting to begin with, especially if you're competing with heavy traffic.
