Did you know
that Hangul, or the korean alphabet, was specifically created so people
could easily learn to read. In 1443, King Sejong, the King of Korea,
created the system with a team of scholars. At the time, the other
option was the complex system of Chinese characters. It was only
accessible to the rich and powerful who had time, money, and access to the
means of learning all the characters.
King Sejong wanted the people of the country to be able to read without
having to depend on people that may or may not be honest about what was
written. The new system could be learned in a very short amount of time,
so the literacy of the Korean people improved almost overnight.
