What is Dia De Los Muertos? Also known as Day of the Dead, Dia de los Muertos is a beautiful Mexican holiday that celebrates the dead. The holiday takes place every November 1 and 2 and is celebrated all over Latin America. Another location that enjoys celebrating this colorful holiday is Los Angeles. The dead are celebrated through dancing (ballet folklorico), food, drinks, memoriable activities (shrines), and parties. By creating shrines decorated with pictures and colorful flowers, the living are inviting the dead to celebrate all together. Some of the most common decorations are colorful calaveras and calacas (skulls and skeletons). Food such as bollios and mexican sweet bread (bread and conchas) are placed on the shrines to welcome the dead. The holiday is a combinations of Aztex ritual with Catholicism and fall as minor holidays on the Mexican Calendar.
