The Gentlewoman's Sport

Learning to fly fish

Fly fishing is an angling technique using an artificial "fly" to catch fish. The fly imitates the sort of food that the fish naturally eats, and is cast using a fly rod, reel, and weighted line. It requires specific casting techniques and is typically regarded as a catch-and-release sport. It is also commonly referred to as a gentleman's sport.

Women make up less than 1/3 of the fly fishing community, even though women may naturally be better at it than men. For fun or for sport, fly fishing requires patience and finesse and a deep sense of awareness on the water. Whether you are interested in a meditative or competitive experience, there are a lot of resources and guides looking to introduce more women to the sport.
