Gua Sha / guā shā / 刮痧

Facial gua sha is one of the most effective ways to lift, sculpt, and contour your face with almost immediate results. A practice originating in China and South East Asia that exploded during the reign of the Ming Dynasty (between 1368 and 1644), the concept actually dates back thousands of years prior to that— to the Paleolithic Age when stones, coins or tins were used to massage parts of the body to increase blood flow when people fell ill. Gua means ‘scrape’ and sha means ‘petechiae’ (tiny, flat red, purple spots that occur on the surface of your skin). When practiced regularly and correctly, the practice promotes better circulation, healthier skin tissue, and stronger facial muscles. This self-care ritual also stimulates lymphatic drainage- reducing puffiness, decrease in the appearance of fine lines, and overall improvement of the skins texture and elasticity. The shifts in the dermis and epidermis of the skin will result in a more youthful, toned complexion and a natural glow.

Similar to techniques rendered during a facial massage, it is recommended practicing gua sha in the direction of natural lymph flow by starting on your neck and gently working your way in an upwards motion. This will help discharge any stagnant energy and the accumulation of excess toxins, which can eventually improve other underlying conditions such as acne, pigmentation, and rosacea.

Prepping the skin for gua sha is essential. Ensure that your skin is completely clean. Apply an oil, balm, or lotion to help the tool glide around the surface of your skin and around the contours of your face. I personally prefer a facial oil or serum; however, use what works for you individually that will not induce any breakouts or irritation. You can also add a hydration mist to aid the process.
