Yoga Nidra is sometimes referred to as yogic sleep. The word
nidra is the Sanskrit term for sleep. Looking at this image
above it does indeed look a lot like sleep but in fact yoga nidra is a
far more powerful practice than merely relaxing on one’s yoga mat.
It is an ancient practice purported to be as old as yoga itself but
was popularised in the last century by the well-renowned yogi, Swami
Satyananda Saraswati of India. It involves lying still, relaxing the
body and detaching the mind from all sensory distractions and then,
often with the guidance of a teacher, one’s attention or consciousness
is focused more deliberately. The goal of the practice is to achieve a
deeply relaxed state of conscious aware sleep.
Cultivating a regular practice of yoga nidra is said to be beneficial
in managing anxiety and a plethora of other physical health complaints
as well as improving one’s capacity for attention and learning.
