Betta Fish

Sass masters of the aquarium

"Bert the Betta"

Betta fish are one of the most popular fish kept in the aquarium hobby. They are showy fish that have been bred to have an amazing variety of colors, patterns and fin types. Their small size is made up by their huge personalities and equally showy scales and frills. These fish thrive best in heated long tanks with a minimum of 5 gallons, though a bigger tank is better with gental water currents; Males should be kept separate from other fish, females can live in sororities but still need a well planted tank with a minimum of 10 gallons, though the more space the better. They enjoy planted aquascapes with room to explore and places to hide or rest. These fish originated in the still canals and rice paddies of Cambodia and Thailand where extreme weather changes and water levels prompted the evolution of a special organ that allows these fish to both breath underwater and from the air, amazingly they can survive outside the water so long as they remain wet.
