Vertical farming has redefined the art of gardening. It is a technique of growing plants upwards using vertically suspended panels instead of outwards. It can be done in grow bags(both store-bought and diy),containers and even raised beds. Most use supporting structures like polls, trellis, wires among others. It is incredible in small spaces, balconies and patios. One can grow just about anything from squash to cucumbers. Vining, rambling, and sprawling plants are readily trained to grow up and off the ground, unlike bush-type species. However, there are those that can be trained up including fruits like apples, pears and cheeries.
There are various things to consider before venturing into gardening like identifying the desired plants, their needs, the level of care needed, your space and time.
This gardening technique results in relatively fewer plant problems and if any, they are easily identifiable and treatable. It is less strenuous as traditional gardens. The plants are less susceptible to diseases since the foliage and fruit are up off the ground. Upward growth provides better air circulation, which means that plants dry faster after watering, thereby reducing the risk of moisture-loving fungi like powdery mildew and rusts taking hold.
Healthier plant growth can be noticed as a result of having more leaf surface exposed to the sun when plants aren’t sprawling on the ground.
It is to be noted though, that the vertical gardens may need frequent watering especially wall-mounted planters due to the shadow cast by the wall.
