Cruelty-Free Beauty is a unregulated term. There are organizations created to provied certifications to companies to provide endorcement for a brand to show consumers that animals are not being used to test their products. But not all of these certifications are treated the same. Some certifications are provided if a company can prove that their final product is not tested on animals, even if their ingredients are tested on animals, or they sell in countries that still require animal testing by law to sell in their stores. Other certifications go through a deep process and vouch that a brand is not using animals to test their products anywhere in the production line including their ingredients and they are not selling their products in stores in countries that still require ths outdated method of safety checking.

Other things that people frequently get confused are whether or not terms like vegan is a synonym with cruelty-free. Spoiler-alert: They are not the same thing. Brands can be considered cruelty-free and use ingredients such as bees wax or lanolin. Also, brands can be considered vegan and still test on animals.

Cruelty-Free Beauty is a complicated form of beauty consumption that has many nuanced layers to it.
