Queen bees maybe the most widely known members of the hive but nearly
all bees are actually female. The female workers maintain the remaining
day to day function of the hive including gathering nectar, producing
wax and cells, regulating the hive temperature, and acting as sentries
to protect the hive from invaders. The few males, known as drones, have
one primary purpose, which is to mate with the queen. If you have ever
thought the human dating scene is harsh, be thankful you’re not a drone
bee, they have their reproductive organs ripped off after successfully
copulating, directly resulting in their death.
