Tai Chi or Tai Chi Chuan is a martial art style founded in China.
The name translates to english as Supreme Ultimate Fist. While Tai Chi is often known as an exercise using slow movements,
it was originally founded as a practical form of combat with exercises translating into strikes, blocks, kicks, throws and takedowns.
In addition to being an style of self-defense, Tai Chi is often considered a form of Qigong, a practice of coordinating movement, breath and awareness to improve health. In a more spiritual interpretation Qigong involves guiding an individuals qi, or internal energy, to promote healing. According to the Mayo Clinic, these include decreased stress, anxiety and depression, increased energy, and improved strength. In addition, it is shown to reduce the chance of fall for senior citizens by 45% .
