We need to make wasting our resources unacceptable in all aspects of
our life. Every product we buy has an environmental footprint and
could end up in landfill or the sea. The impact of plastic pollution
on our oceans is becoming increasingly clear, having drastic impacts
on marine ecosystems. Reducing the number of single-use items and
swapping for reusable alternatives like a water/coffee thermos or
shopping bags are great items to start with. The next time you are
thinking of throwing away items in usable condition, try donating!

The food we eat has an impact on our health, the environment and the
welfare of animals and workers. Forests have been devastated to make
space to raise cattle and grow crops to feed livestock, oceans have
become barren are they are overfished and trawled. What we eat
contributes around a quarter of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
and is responsible for almost 60% of global biodiversity loss, driving
wildlife extinction. Due to the amount of space, water and food needed
to farm animals, transitioning into a more plant based diet would help
reduce carbon and methane emissions, decrease amount of energy
expended to raise these animals, and protect our vital water supply
from agricultural run off (animal waste.)

Your vote as a consumer is POWERFUL. This includes what you choose to
purchase at the grocery store, online, shopping mall or attractions
like zoos or seaquariums. Your purchasing ability is a powerful tool
to generate change. Without demand, there is no product. By purchasing
goods that support the environment and wellbeing of animals, you help
protect the diversity of flora and fauna on this planet. Before
spending your money on something you don't truly align with, stop and
think on what you want to support. Corporations and entire industries
have shifted their practices to be more sustainable or ethical because
of consumer influence. Every time you buy or don't buy a good or
service, you are sending out a signal as to what is important to you.

As the popular saying goes, "Knowledge is Power." One of the best
things you can do is to keep yourself informed โ learn about the
science behind climate change and the responsibility all sectors hold
in addressing the issue. Evidence based data leaves you better
equipped to have those conversations with your friends and family and
the people you want to influence. Get yourself informed on the facts,
stay up to date with recent news on the state of our natural world and
understand what you and your community can do to help. There are some
great documentaries on streaming platforms like Netflix!
