Leathercraft is the practice of making leather into practical objects
such as bags, shoes, belts, wallets, or artwork. The following
techniques can be applied to something as simple as a keychain or as
large as a backpack. Once you are generally familiar with these skills,
it is relatively simple to build upon basic techniques and elevate them
to more advanced projects.
Saddle stitch
Saddle stitching is a very strong hand-sewn stitch, used to join two
pieces of leather together.
Burnishing
Burnishing leather is the method of polishing rough edges into a
glossy and smooth finish
Dyeing
The application of pigments carried by solvents or water into the
pores of the leather
Painting
Leather painting differs from leather dyeing in that paint remains
only on the surface while dyes are absorbed into the leather
Carving
Leather carving entails using metal implements to compress moistened
leather in such a way as to give a three-dimensional effect.
Stamping
Leather stamping involves the use of shaped implements to create an
imprint onto a leather surface, often by striking the stamps with a
mallet.
Fabrication techniques
There are many types of fabrication techniques, however the most
common in leather craft are molding, shaping, laser cutting/etching,
perforation, pyrography, etc.
