This form of dance combines creative expression with athleticism- all
while moving in the air. Hence, immersing yourself in aerial dance helps
build your strength and flexibility whilst allowing you to fall in love
with the grace and beauty of your movements. As the dance is done 'in the
air', aerialists are able to not only occupy the horizontal space around
them, but also the vertical space.
My personal favorite forms of aerial dance are aerial hoop and rope that
demonstrate a unique and 'obscure' way of expressing yourself through
dance. Especially when you put on some good music.
a short history
Aerial dance was first recognized in the 1970s in the United State as a
subgenre to modern dance. It involves the movement of performers whilst
being suspended in the air. Typically, this is done by incorporating an
apparatus or mechanism that is attached to a ceiling, rig, etc. Currently
there is a debate concerning whether of not aerial dance should be
categorized within the category of circus arts, or whether it should be
given its own artistic identity.
one of the best ways to know if aerial dance is for you, is to try out a
trial class.
