The Salt Flats of Rio Maior are located about 3 km from the city center and are located in a valley at the foot of the Serra dos Candeeiros, in the Natural Park of Serras de Aire e Candeeiros. Classified as a Property of Public Interest since December 1997, these are the only indoor salt pans in Portugal, and the only ones that are fully operational in Europe. The first reference to its existence dates back to 1177, but it is thought that rock salt has been used since prehistory. Surrounded by vineyards and farmland they are considered a wonder of nature as is 30 km away. Salt is a vestige of the presence of the sea in remote times. The water, about seven times saltier than sea water, comes from a well, after passing through a rock salt deposit.
