How to tell if your breastfed newborn is getting enough milk during the
first weeks.
Many parents worry if their breastfed baby is getting enough milk during
the first days of life, and it may take a little while before you feel
confident your baby is getting what they need. You cannot see how
much milk your breasts are making, but there are some signs that can
help you figure out if your little one is thriving:
The number of dirty nappies is a good indicator of how much milk
your baby has taken. Our Nappy Calculator can help
you figure out if your baby is producing an appropiate number of
dirty diapers for their age.
Your newborn's stomach is tiny: breastfeed your little one
frequently. The more often you breastfeed, the more milk you will
produce. Wake your baby if necessary!
Newborns often lose weight during the first few days, but they
should be regaining it by day 3-4, once milk production
increases.
In the early days, babies typically have one wet diaper for each day
of life (1 on day one, 2 on day two…). Once mom’s milk comes in,
expect 5-6+ wet diapers every 24 hours.
Make sure the latch is correct and listen for swallowing while your
baby feeds.
