Origin of Video Games

The First Video Game

In October 1958, Physicist William Higinbotham created what is thought to be the first video game just for entertainment. It was a very simple tennis game, similar to the classic 1970s video game Pong. Higinbotham had a small analog computer that could display various curves, including the path of a bouncing ball, on an oscilloscope. It took Higinbotham only a couple of hours to conceive the idea of a tennis game, and only a few days to put together the basic pieces. Having worked on displays for radar systems and many other electronic devices, Higinbotham had no trouble designing the simple game display.

Video Games now

Video games today are defined based on their platform, which include arcade video games, console games and PC games. More recently, the industry has expanded into mobile gaming through smartphones and tablet computers, virtual/augmented reality systems, and remote cloud gaming. Video games are also classified into a wide range of genres based on their type of gameplay and purpose. Today, in 2021, video games have improved dramatically over the 70 year period. We are given games such as Call of Duty, Minecraft, GTA V etc. which possess the ability to connect with people across the globe, and have high definition quality graphics across multiple platforms.
