What we eat should be all about what is around us. Putting aside the
various different diets all around the globe there is one thing that
we all need to eat,
fruits and vegetables.
That being said, a farmer's market is sure to be your favourite place.
Globalization is amazing for foodies of all kinds. We now have the
chance to try true Taiwanese cuisine without leaving Europe, sushi
right in brazil and probably pizza in Antarctica. Despite the fact
this is all pretty awesome, every ingredient that in not native to
your homeland should be consumed as an exception and never as a rule
for a wide variety of reasons about which we will talk about soon
enough!
You get better value for money! π°
When you buy what is sprouting near you, right now, the offer is
wider and local! Therefore, traveling costs are almost none and
the ingredients are cheaper. Simple math! When you want something
out of season it has to come from a region with a different
climate or from a greenhouse. This consumes more time and
resources which raises the price.
There is also a direct connection between distance/travel mean and
price. For instance, when you buy plane mangos, they are pricier
than when you buy boat mangos. They may even come from the same
country, but the plane will take hours while the boat will take
weeks meaning that they will be reaped while still green and
mature on the boat. Now none of these are ideal options. Boat
mangos will not taste as good and plane mangos will have a huge
carbonic footprint.
The environment will say "Thank You"! πΏ
The hunt for certain ingredients all year round creates a demand
that is hard for farmers to live up to. The consequences are
usually intensive farming and mass importation. The big problem is
that, unfortunately, not all lands are equally fertile, and not
all countries have a strong agricultural facet, so the ones who do
end up getting the bad side of the coin. Their earth is used for
mass production to feed foreign countries and while the homeland
is sometimes in need. On top of this the demand asks for produce
that does not perish, looks perfect and is not affected by
diseases.
When you farm more produce per square meter than you should the
earth will get arid, dry, and eventually stop being fertile.
Intensive farming has very real consequences such as the fact that
a carrot today is not nearly as nutritious as a carrot would be 50
years ago.
It is actually better for your health! πͺ
There is a reason why mangos are a tropical fruit and cabbages are
especially good in winter. Mother nature is smart, and the lady
knows what she is doing. Each and every vegetable, fruit or fungus
has its own set of vitamins and nutrients. This mix has a purpose,
cabbages have nutrients that help your immune system during colder
times, just like oranges help you prevent colds. Mangos, on the
other hand, are made to keep you hydrated when you leave under the
equatorial sun. So, what really happens? Well, when you eat mangos
during winter (on a regular basis) you will notice that eventually
you will get a runny nose. This is caused by an unbalance between
what your body needs in that moment and what you are eating. It is
not a habit that will make you sick. However, a balanced
personalized diet has a positive influence on how your body
handles diseases.
It will taste amazing! β¨
I am sure you have noticed by now that even if you find tomatoes
on the shelve all year round, they do not always taste the same.
This goes for all produce; things taste better when they are in
season. When you buy in season you buy what has just been caught
in your local area. This is amazing because the time frame between
the produce being reaped and coming to your plate is a lot
shorter. Meaning that the ingredient matures in the tree or the
ground instead of being collected while still green to survive the
long voyage until it reaches the shelve of your closest
supermarket.
Buying local is the closest you get from eating the fruit right
out of the tree. This is when the produce is tastier and since it
comes from such a geographically close source all the nutrients
will be right in tune with what your body needs right now.
