Around half of women feel unsafe walking alone after dark in a busy public place or on a quiet street near their home, and 97% of women in the UK have been sexually harassed. Women are often bombarded with tips on how to keep themselves safe in public, and a vast majority of women are already acutely aware of their basic safety strategies. They have been drummed into women since childhood. Women's safety doesn't lie only with women but also every citizen, including men.

Here are some tips for men how genuinely want to make women feel safe, who may not realise they´re inadvertently making women feel unsafe and who understandably need some guidance on what actually helps:

• 1. Recognise that women's wariness of you is not personal.
• 2. Keep your distance.
• 3. Keep your hands to yourself, even in passing.
• 4. Offer to escort your female friends to places.
• 5. Intervene when women are being objectified or harassed.
• 6. Don't flirt with a woman who isn't showing any interest.
• 7. Be an example and a mentor to younger men and boys.
