Women in Mathematics

Maryam Mirzakhani

Maryam Mirzakhani

Maryam Mirzakhani, following in the footsteps of the Ancient Persian Scholar, Khwarizmi, known as the “Father of Algebra”, this young Iranian woman carried on the Persian legacy of the rigorous pursuit of knowledge. Through her diligence, determination, and relentless questioning, she exceeded the old boundaries for women mathematicians winning many “firsts” in the field of mathematical theory, research and innovation. She continued her education in the United States for graduate work and went on to earn a PhD in 2004 from Harvard University. She described her process as similar to “being lost in a jungle and trying to use all the knowledge that you can gather to come up with some new tricks, and with some luck, you might find a way out.”
