Miyajima Island

Miyajima Island

Miyajima Island, also known as Itsukushima (厳島), means "Shrine Island" in Japanese. It is a part of the city of Hatsukaichi in the Hiroshima Prefecture. Miyajima is famous for its Daiganji Temple, Itsukushima Shrine, a five-storied pagoda, and a beautiful aquarium.

Similarly to Nara Park, deer roam freely around the city and coexist with the citizens and tourists. Miyajima also has a very popular treat called Momiji, which is a maple leaf-shaped pastry with some kind of filling (lemon custard, chocolate, etc.). These treats are based on the beautiful, sacred maple trees that cover the island.
