Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (also known as BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport originally developed from Judo by the Gracie family in Brazil. It is based primarily on ground fighting and submission holds. The aim is to systematically control your opponent, gain a dominant position and submit them using a number of submission techniques including choke holds and joint locks.

The traditional uniform used in BJJ is known as a Gi (pronounced 'Ghee' ). BJJ follows a belt system, whereby the colour of your belt represents your level of proficieny in the art. For adults, there are 5 different belt colours in order of least to most proficient:
