The German Shepherd Dog was initially, as the name implies,
bred to herd and guard sheep. Today however the German Shepherd is also
used for work with police and other law enforcement, in
the military, for tracking and other scent-work, search and rescue, and as
therapy and guide dogs amongst many other uses.
As impressive and versatile the German Shepherd is as a
working dog, it is also a very kind and loyal
family dog. They are very intelligent and keen to learn.
They need both physical and mental stimulation to
thrive. German Shepherds see their family as their pack, and very much
enjoy the time spent with the family. If the German Shepherd is socialized
properly they are great with children and other household pets.
