Oxford Languages describes astrology as "the study of the movements and relative positions of celestial bodies interpreted as having an influence on human affairs and the natural world." Western tropical astrology divides the sky into 12 equal parts, which equal the 12 zodiac signs. One's birth date, place, and time determine where the planets, sun, and moon were located in the sky when they were born, and which astrological signs they fell into. When someone asks for your “sign,” they are asking for your sun sign—where the sun was at the time of your birth.
