Religion was a significant part of people's daily lives in Ancient Egypt. It was believed that the Gods were present for a person's entire life, at death, and beyond. Egyptians understood that life on earth was only one part of a much longer and grander journey that could lead to a paradise known as The Field of Reeds. The spiritual world was integral to the physical world and this understanding was conveyed through the use of symbols in art, architecture, amulets and other objects of grandure and nobility.

In a largely illiterate society, symbols were vital in relaying the most important values of the culture and history to Ancient Egpytians. For many, reading literature, poetry, or hymns about the Gods, Pharaohs, and history was not possible, and thus symbols across the land were essential for generations of people.
