was built in 1898–1901 by Isabella Stewart Gardner (1840–1924), an American art collector, philanthropist, and patron of the arts in the style of a 15th-century Venetian palace.
It opened to the public in 1903.Gardner collected and carefully displayed a collection of more than 7500 paintings, sculptures, furniture, textiles, silver, ceramics,
1500 rare books, and 7000 archival objects from ancient Rome, Medieval Europe, Renaissance Italy, Asia, the Islamic world, and 19th-century France and America.

Since then it has gone through multiple name changes as well as moving its galleries and support spaces over 13 times.
Its current home was built in 2006 in the South Boston Seaport District and designed by architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro.
