Vincent Willem van Gogh (pronounced โvan Gokhโ) was a Dutch post-impressionist artist. He was born on 30 March 1853 in Zundert, Netherlands to an upper-middle-class family. Van Gogh only began painting at the age of 27 and fully developed his style of painting during his stay at Arles, France in 1888 at the age of 35. He suffered from manic depression and delusions which lead to the infamous story of the artist cutting off his own left ear, which happened after an argument with fellow-artist Gauguin. He ultimately committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest. Although, he never achieved success during his lifetime, he is now one of the most popular and influential figures in the history of Western art. Learn more
