Summer Workshops for Girls: Robotics
You are interested in robotics, but feel like there is no place to try out building and programming a 🤖 robot? Well ... I might have somehting you might like 🦾
The R4G or Robo4girls was created to allow young girls to discover their interest for tech - especially that for robotics ⚙️ and 👩🏻💻 programming. In our summer workshops you will have the opportunity to not only learn something new and have some fun, but you will also be encouraged to do something different. Our research has shown that although girls initially are not as interested in robotics as boys, after completing our Robina or Roberta Workshop >60% voice that they want to work in tech.
👩👩👧👧 Only girls? Why?
The majority of girls is not encouraged to persue a career in male dominant careers - and becoming a programmer or a mechanical engineer is usually not an average girl's dream occupation. We ought to change this by allowing our workshop participants to try something different. We do not want boys to feel left out (in fact, we even offer specific workshops for boys or for girls and boys), but our robotics projects - Robina, Roberta and R4G - focus on girls since, as already stated girls tend to persue a career in other fields since they do not get the chance to experiment with technology as much as boys. i.e. playing with remote-controlled cars, building, ...
⏳ What is the ideal age for participants?
This is a great question. Our research has shown that in order for our workshops to be effective and actually influence a girl's job choice and interests, the workshop should be completed before puberty. This is due to develelopmental reasons.
For Robinas Zoo our main focus lies on girls aged 8-10 years, for Roberta/R4G on girls aged 10-12.
