The prickly pear is a fruit that originates from South America and is known by different names. In Mexico they are called tunas but the latin name of the fruit is opuntia. It is a very popular fruit that gets eaten in the summer when they are in season in Mexico. There will normally be stands full of different tunas for you to choose from to eat.

Tunas are oval shaped with tiny spines all around it and grow in different colors such as yellow, green, orange, and red. The red tunas are the most popular because they are sweeter. Tunas are very juicy and have a very refreshing taste that will cool you down on a hot summer’s day. Prickly pear is full of seeds which you also eat but many people have a hard time if they are newly introduced to this fruit.

Prickly pears have some great benefits such as antiviral, antiinflammatory, high in fiber, antioxidants, and carotenoids. With these properties it is promoted to help with treating diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity , and even hangovers.
