About
Dance is a performing art form consisting of sequences of movement, either
improvised or choreographed. This movement has aesthetic and often
symbolic value.
Dance can be categorized and described by its choreography, by its
repertoire of movements, or by its historical period or place of origin.
Other forms of human movement are sometimes said to have a dance-like
quality, including martial arts, gymnastics, cheerleading, figure skating,
synchronised swimming, marching bands, and many other forms of athletics.
Ballet is an extremely disciplined and artistic dance form, performed
to music using precise and highly formalized set steps and gestures.
Classical ballet, which originated in Renaissance Italy and
established its present form during the 19th century, is characterized
by light, graceful, fluid movements and the use of pointe shoes. It is
a discipline that takes YEARS to perfect, & not many dancers can do it
or are cut out for the pain that comes with standing on your toes (en
pointe!)
There are TEN different styles of ballroom dance; 5 Latin and 5 Ballroom. They are as follows:
Latin Dance Styles | Ballroom Dance Styles |
---|---|
Cha Cha | Waltz |
Rumba | Tango |
Jive | Foxtrot |
Paso Doble | Viennese Waltz |
Samba | Quickstep |
Commercial Styles of Dance
This category really encompasses any other styles that are not latin/ballroom or ballet, and are much more commercially viable.
