Behind the Clean House
histories of housemaids from Brazil

"Behind the Clean House" is a non-fiction book written in 2019.
It shows the trajectory of 4 (four) housemaids in São Paulo,
the most populous city in Brazil.

The Book

🧺
Brazil employs around 7 million domestic workers: the largest group in the world. There are three employees for each group of 100 inhabitants.
👩🏿‍🏭
If a meeting was organized with all its housekeepers, Brazil would gather a population larger than Denmark's, made up mostly of black women.
📘
With this in mind, the book seeks to show the daily lives of four women, their work and their personal lives, in order to show the impacts of the profession.

Hi! My name's Letícia de Jesus Oliveira, I'm a journalist from São Paulo, Brazil. I started to write little histories since I can remember. The idea of the book came when I found this article on BBC showing that Brazil has the highest number of housemaids in the entire world. My mom, Maria, worked as a housemaid/nanny for a long period of her life, so I was touched by the subject. I've always wanted to write a book and since I was in my last year of college, I decided to transform this idea in a non-fiction book. I got in touch with these incridible women that decided to tell their histories to me and wrote every single page and got my degree thanks to them!
