Butterfly Gardens

Support urban beauty and pollinators

Butterfly gardening has become one of the most popular hobbies today. It adds a spot of beauty to your property and also creates a refuge to encourage pollinators. Your first step should be to find out which butterflies are in your area. You can do this by spending some time outdoors to see which species are around. You then need to choose the best location for your garden that will provide sun, shelter and water. Butterflies use two different types of plants - those that provide nectar for the adults to eat (nectar plant), and those that provide food for their offspring (caterpillar host plant). It is best to find out which plant species are native to your area and plant those rather than exotic species. Your local nursery can also help you determine which plants are native to your location.
