Ayurveda is a holistic healthcare tradition based on the recordings of ancient sacred texts, known as the Vedas. The Vedas originated in India and are over 5000 years old. Translated from sanskrit, ayurveda literally means science of life. It is strongly believed that the body and mind are inextricably connected. Therefore, health is being treated from a holistic perspective that focuses both on the human body and mind. In short, ayurveda provides recommendations concerning your lifestyle, including your diet, to prevent and treat diseases.
Also, known as mind-body types, doshas are the foundational concepts in traditional Ayurveda. The three doshas Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are energetic forces of nature, functional principles that help us to better understand
ourselves, and the world around us.
Vata
Vata derives from the elements of space and air and thus represents the energy of movement.
Vata is linked to creativity and flexibility; it governs all movement—the flow of the breath, the pulsation of the
heart, all muscle contractions, tissue movements, cellular mobility—and communication throughout the mind and the
nervous system.
Pitta
Pitta derives from the elements of fire and water and represents the energy of transformation.
Pitta is closely related to intelligence, understanding, and the digestion of foods, thoughts, emotions, and
experiences; it governs nutrition and metabolism, body temperature, and the light of understanding.
Kapha
Kapha derives from the elements of earth and water and embodies the watery energies of love and compassion. Kapha lends structure, solidity, and cohesiveness to all things.
It hydrates all cells and systems, lubricates the joints, moisturizes the skin, maintains immunity, and protects
the tissues.
