The Russian language is an East-Slavic language, and the official
language of Russia and several other countries that border it. It is
spoken in many parts of Eastern Europe and Eurasia, and was the
dominant language taught within the Soviet Union before its’
dissolution. It is the eighth largest language in terms of number of
people who speak it, and is the second most commonly spoken language
on the internet. The Russian alphabet uses Cyrillic letters and is
unique in that it distinguishes between “hard” and “soft” sounds. Its’
modern form has been influenced by both the Old Church Slavonic and
Tsar Peter I the Great, who encouraged the integration and influence
from western languages. The 19th Century poet, Aleksandr Pushkin is
celebrated for his literary influence on the development of modern
Russian.
