Food often defines the character of a community. This is especially true when it comes to niche culinary traditions such as the delectable Sindhi cuisine. For the people of Sindh, a community uprooted and dispersed by the India-Pakistan partition in 1947, cooking and preserving traditional Sindhi recipes provides a vital connection to their homeland.
Sindhi cuisine, to a great extent, is influenced by the Mughals, Arabs, Rajputs and other dynasties that ruled over the Sindh province at different points in time. Their kitchens, with their distinct recipes and ingredients, helped identify and anchor them in the places they adopted as their new homes. This history is also why frugality lies at the heart of many Sindhi recipes — having to rebuild their lives from scratch led to them valuing what was available to them wherever they settled.
In this space, I look forward to sharing fresh and flavourful recipes of this little-known cuisine alongside the occasional experiments and other cuisines. All this while preserving family favourites and hopefully sparking some inspiration in your kitchen! ✨
