Quinta da Regaleira is a World Heritage Site
recognized by UNESCO. The property consists of a romantic palace,
chapel, and a gorgeous park that features grottoes, lakes, "Initiation"
wells, and fountains.
The former owner of the property was António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro -
a well-known Brazillian-Portuguese business man and Freemason. The large
property was designed by the Italian architect Luigi Manini.
All of the structures built on the Quinta da Regaleira grounds
are filled with interesting symbolism, which have been linked to
Freemasonry, the Knights Templar, alchemy, Tarot mysticism and more. The most
notable structure is the main "Initiation Well" on the grounds. The Well was
not actually built to hold water - it was designed to hold secret
ceremonies. The Well has a spiral staircase that leads you down 9 levels
- it is said that the 9 levels are meant to represent Dante's "Nine
Circles of Hell".
