Kakigōri (かき氷) is a traditional Japanese dessert, made os shaved ice and flavoured with syrup or condensed milk, and often decorated with fresh fruits, sweet bean paste or other sweet toppings.
The history of kakigori dates back to Heian period (794~1185), when ice blocks, preserved from winter, would be shaved in summer and served to aristocrats with syrup. Around 19th centure, when ice became more available all year round, kakigoi also became more affordable to general public. The first kakigori store was also opened around that time in Yokohama city.
July 25th in Japan is considered to be Kakigori Day - the pronunciation of the date sounds similar to "summer ice" (natsu gori) in Japanese.
