A via ferrata is a protected climbing route found in the Alps and
certain other locations. The term "via ferrata" is used in most
countries and languages except notably in German-speaking regions, which
use Klettersteig - "climbing path".
In Austria, climbing routes are categorised according to the HΓΌsler +
Schall via ferrata scales. This classification starts with A / K1
(easy), and goes up to F / K6 (extremely difficult). You need
surefootedness, good physical condition, climbing equipment and a head
for heights to master a via ferrata. From grade D / K4 routes and
upwards, additional equipment might be necessary.
