Lisa Taddeo followed the lives of three real women as they sought to
come to terms with their own self. In this book, she portrays how all
three women struggle with their womanhood. They are all confronted with
their sexuality in their formative years and see their worth attached to
it. Lina is raped by three peers from her school; Maggie is drawn into a
consuming relationship with a teacher; and Sloane is taught that her
body is a tool with which to define her place in society. None of them
believe that they are enough, that they are worthy. And none of them are
surrounded by people who communicate this to them.
Lisa Taddeo writes in her epilogue: βWomen have agency, but children do
not.β One of the questions the book powerfully raises is whether this
agency is affected when its lack thereof is abused at a young age.
