The Pizza Margherita is said to be invented by a chef to honour the Queen and the Kindgom of Italy, since the toppings - tomato (red), mozzarella (white) and basil (green) represented the colours of the Italian flag. While the name Pizza Margherita may have been popularised because of the Queen's visit, a pizza made with the same toppings was already present in Naples between 1796 and 1810.
