ASMR: A New Sensation

Whispery audio, slime cracking, and Korean street food?

The acronym "ASMR" highlights one of the newest phenomena to be encountered on YouTube in 2020 and 2021. "ASMR," which stands for "autonomous sensory meridian response," refers to videos which feature soft, often whispery-or-crackling sounds which are designed to induce a response of calm joy and pleasure. The subjects of ASMR videos are as broad as one's imagination, ranging from videos of people cracking clay and slime plasters to videos of people cooking and eating street food and mukbang in Korea. Some ASMR creators tap microphones with makeup brushes and some tell stories. ASMR is useful for relaxation, with many creators emphasizing its potential for helping a person to sleep. During the long period of isolation occasioned by quarantine, ASMR videos have provided some much-appreciated sensory stimulation for many viewers, like yours truly. :)
