The European Union is a unique economic and political union between 27 EU
countries that together cover much of the continent. What began as a
purely economic union has evolved into an organization spanning policy
areas, from climate, environment and health to external relations and
security, justice and migration. A name change from the European Economic
Community (EEC) to the European Union (EU) in 1993 reflected this.

body that defines the overall political directions and priorities of the European Union.
It comprises the heads of state or government of the EU member states,

from 27 EU countries. Together, the 27 Members of the
College are the Commission's political leadership during
a 5-year term. They are assigned responsibility for
specific policy areas by the President.

The Members of the European Parliament are directly elected
by voters in all Member States to represent people’s interests
with regard to EU law-making and to make sure other EU institutions
